Soaring prices weigh on Japanese food banks

The warehouse shelves of Food Bank Net Nishisaitama, a non-profit group that delivers food to financially distressed households in Tokorozawa, Saitama Prefecture, have become visibly empty in recent months.

The group is just one of many food banks – organizations that deliver food collected through donations to families in financial difficulty and free canteens for children from low-income households – that have recently been hit by soaring prices due to the weak yen and the war in Ukraine.
