Shortly after 5:35 p.m. on June 14, 2022, we received a call about a man in emotional distress on St. George Street in Greater Sudbury.

Patrol officers arrived at the scene, placed containment on the residence, and began attempting to speak with the man who had barricaded himself inside the house.

Members of our Emergency Response Unit (ERU) arrived on scene and began crisis communications to de-escalate the situation and bring about a peaceful resolution. Several attempts to establish communication were made, but the man refused to speak to the police.

As part of our ongoing commitment to providing services to people experiencing a mental health crisis, a local psychiatrist visited the scene to assist officers.

At approximately 2:10 a.m. this morning, June 15, 2022, members of our ERU entered the residence as concerns about his welfare were mounting. Officers took the man into custody without incident under the Mental Health Act. He was taken to hospital to receive the support services he needs.

As this incident was a mental health incident, no further information relating to the man will be provided.

We would like to thank community members in the area for your patience and cooperation.
