SAN CARLOS, CALIFORNIA: The Bay Area has been rocked after a man allegedly beheaded his ex-girlfriend in broad daylight outside her home. It is believed that the beheading was done with a samurai sword. Neighbors were unlucky enough to witness this gruesome sight, but luckily the 7 and 1 year olds were inside and did not witness their mother’s grisly murder. Now authorities believe the woman has already received a restraining order and the man suffered from schizophrenia. After the death of their mother, the children were placed in the custody of child protective services.


Jose Raphael Solano Landaeta, 33, beheaded Karina Castro, 27, outside her Bay Area home on Thursday, September 8, in full view of her neighbors. He was later arrested with homicide charges. Landaeta reportedly fled the scene but reappeared just as cops were on the scene, at which time he was arrested. New information reveals that Landaeta is the father of the one-year-old child Castro had, but she obtained a restraining order against him in April 2022. Castro’s family have now explained that Landaeta is a diagnosed schizophrenic with a history alcohol problems. . He was someone they warned Castro to stay away from, but she kept seeing him.

The San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office said Patch.com that the weapon used in the beheading was indeed a samurai sword saying, “The accused attacked the victim with a samurai sword, repeatedly cutting, causing the victim’s head to be nearly severed.” He then left to put the sword in his car and returned to check on his ex-girlfriend’s lifeless body.

Karina Castro continued to see her ex-boyfriend even after a restraining order

The crime that looks straight out of a movie took place at the 300-400 block of Laurel Street and Magnolia Avenue at 11:50 a.m. According ABC7, the two were in an ongoing relationship but the victim was granted a temporary restraining order against the suspect, Hayward resident Jose Rafael Solano Landaeta. According San Francisco Chronicle, Landaeta appeared in San Mateo County Superior Court on Monday, September 12, along with attorney Robert Cummings. Cummings worried about whether the defendant was fit to stand trial. In response to this, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said, “It’s better to deal with this now than to deal with this in two years when we’re about to start a trial. If he is found incompetent to stand trial which results in criminal proceedings being held until he is restored to his capacity – if ever.”

Lt. Eamon Allen, at a press conference, said: “They arrived within minutes and found an obviously dead woman on the street in this area. They began working on the scene and shortly after , the male suspect returned to the scene and was quickly detained by sheriff’s deputies and was later placed under arrest for homicide.We can confirm that a stabbing instrument was used in the commission of the crime. This weapon is still in circulation Landaeta is charged with one count of murder, with two enhancements: use of a deadly weapon and grievous bodily harm.
